H. RANDOLPH SUMNER

Mr. Sumner practices primarily in the areas of defense of workers’ compensation claims, personal injury, negligence and insurance law and civil litigation. He mediates cases principally in the area of workers’ compensation.

Mr. Sumner graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (B.A. 1979) and Wake Forest University Law School (J.D. 1982). He has been with the firm since 1987, and currently serves as its President. Mr. Sumner has been awarded the highest professional rating of "a-v" by Martindale-Hubbell. Mr. Sumner is a member of the Gaston County, North Carolina and American Bar Associations and the North Carolina State Bar. He has also received the Volunteer Lawyer Distinguished Service award for 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, & 1994 for time and services donated to indigent clients who were referred by Legal Services. He was awarded the Bar Association’s Volunteer Service award 1988, 1989, 1993, 1994 & 1995. He also received the State of North Carolina Pro Bono Service Award in 1996. He is past president of the Gaston County Bar Association.

Mr. Sumner has lectured extensively on workers’ compensation issues to employer and insurance groups. He has also lectured for the North Carolina Bar Association with respect to providing pro bono legal services. He is a member of the North Carolina State Bar Committee on Workers’ Compensation, along with addressing numerous seminars on "Advanced Workers’ Compensation." He also serves as a mediator for the N.C. Workers’ Compensation Board. He is a past member of the Litigation Committee for the North Carolina State Bar.

In addition to his professional activities, Mr. Sumner has been a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church and is a Mason. He has served on numerous boards of community civic organizations, including the boards of Rotary Adolescent Treatment Centers, the Gastonia Historic Zoning Commission, the Gaston County YMCA "PALS" program and Gastonia Community Action. Mr. Sumner is married to Elizabeth Neisler Sumner, a member of the firm, and they have two children.
